Clifton Life celebrates the best of local living. Published every three weeks, it includes the very latest on property, arts, dining and shopping, in Clifton and surrounding areas.

So now it’s dark before we even leave the office, it’s proper stay-inside weather and, more importantly, James Bond has returned to our screens, we’re remembering the thrill of indoor pursuits such as cinema, theatre and music.
This issue tries to reflect what makes Bristol “the most culturally independent city west of London”, in the words of George Ferguson, architect, owner of the Tobacco Factory and Bristol Beer Factory, who is subject of our Clifton Lives Q&A (page 106).
Encounters, Bristol’s festival of short and animated films, returns to the waterfront for the 14th time, bringing with it talent from far and wide; we’re also delighted to have an exclusive interview with the original Pop Idol Will Young, who discusses leg warmers and Plato’s view of objective values with Deri Robins. I’d like to see Girls Aloud tackling that one.
Now, the long nights are also a sign that we need to start thinking about Christmas shopping, and with this in mind we asked five local retailers to pick their favourite gifts currently in stock (page 92). Knowing that women start planning these things a little earlier, we also put together an Editor’s choice of quirky gifts to buy the man in your life (page 60). Our Special shop (page 64), meanwhile, is pod – guaranteed to have something for those tricky-to-buy-for relatives.
Should you feel like venturing outside, I wouldn’t hesitate to suggest a day trip to Portishead, the subject of this issue’s Out and About (page 42), having recently visited the town to admire its extensive redevelopment – in which public art plays a highly visible role.
Back in Clifton, our cover property (page 12) is a classic Victorian town house – a work of art in itself.
